2022 GMC Hummer EV Full Review

ev

There have been very few production vehicles with this much drama and presence. After a rollercoaster ride to 60 mph or more in Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode, it’s tough to leave a drive in the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup without grinning and shaking your head longingly. Or, perhaps it’s your whole body shaking. The novelty wears off a little as the initial effects fade in your memory, but the new GMC Hummer is unforgettable from start to finish—that much was made abundantly evident during our 2022 Truck of the Year competition.

The whimsy begins with the lunar rover concept, which serves as both a design inspiration and a metacommentary (GMC’s rapid construction of this enormous electric vehicle is quite fairly a moonshot). With glass roof panels, a centre bar that can be removed for an open-air vista skyward, and clearance lights that give the mil-spec hood a cool, ghostly glow at night, the new Hummer goes all out. Then there is the most recent iteration of the spooky-good Super Cruise driver assistance technology, as well as the incredibly fun CrabWalk mode. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell that this is a production vehicle rather than some rogue engineers’ crazy side project.

But customers of these massive electric vehicle pickups—more precisely, the fully outfitted Edition 1 model, which is the only Hummer available for the 2022 model year—will have to put up with them, unlike those engineers. The attention the truck receives from onlookers may never get old to them, but the excessive wind noise, shoddy inside materials, and exaggerated body movements could. At least, the four-wheel steering offers remarkable advantages in terms of turning radius and general agility; it is a feature that received high marks from all of our judges.

The Hummer : What is it?

The old Hummer brand name is brought back in 2022 by GMC, but with a whole new meaning. The older Hummers, which included the H1, a civilian adaptation of the original Humvee military vehicle, as well as the more popular H2 and H3 SUVs, are recognised as products of their era: distinctly macho, but also distinctly enormous and inefficient. The contemporary version of the ideal off-road vehicle appears to be efficient, strong, and simply stunning.

A big pickup truck that runs on electricity rather than fuel is the new Hummer EV. GMC refers to it as a supertruck, and based on its capabilities, that would be accurate. One package offers enormous power, crazy quick acceleration, and perhaps class-leading off-road performance.

The loaded top trim, the Hummer electric vehicle Edition 1, will be the first model to go on sale. It has two electric motors for the back wheels and one electric motor for the front wheels.
With a lot of the hardware and features from Edition 1, the Hummer EV3X will make its debut in the fall of 2022. In the spring of 2023, the entry-level Hummer EV2 will make its debut. The mid-range Hummer EV2X will follow a year later. Both will have a layout with two motors.

How is the Hummer powered?

The Hummer electric vehicle Edition 1 has a staggering 1,000 horsepower in total output. Additionally, the Edition 1 model has a “Watts to Freedom” mode that, according to claims, allows for full power acceleration to 60 mph in just three seconds. The Hummer employs adjustable ride height to lower the truck to its lowest point, checks the batteries’ health and their capacity to access full power, plays a particular song, and finally activates launch control. It’s a not-so-subtle jab at Tesla, but it gets the Hummer electric vehicle moving quickly.

The advanced battery array in the floor of the vehicle is armored against off-road damage. GMC has not yet said how much kWh’s worth of electricity it can hold, but the Hummer EV’s 800-volt architecture allows it to take full advantage of the latest 350-kW DC fast-charging stations. GMC says plugging the Hummer electric vehicle into one of these lightning-quick stations can add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Cruising range is estimated at 329 miles on a full charge. Unfortunately, these stations aren’t very common. Most stations have a much slower charge rate, and in hot weather, the charge rate can be even slower. So, you’ll need to adjust your expectations according to what chargers are installed in your area.

Hummer : Interior

To fit its function, the interior of the Hummer combines industrial brutalism and futuristic minimalism. The horizontal dash and crossing rectangular shapes mimic some exterior styling features, while the upholstery’s combination of black and white with bronze accents gives the vehicle a posh elegance befitting of its high price. GMC engineers and interior decorators adhered to a single design philosophy while creating the Hummer : “Shoot for the moon.” This sort of slogan appears on the speaker grilles, infotainment graphics, and the dead pedal, where you can see an outline of Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon. It is a metaphor that encourages lofty goals and future exploration. The Hummer doesn’t let you down if you enjoy easter eggs.

The majority of functions are handled by the big infotainment display positioned in the centre of the dashboard, but the two rows of physical switches underneath offer a decent backup. The physical controls have ridges to prevent gloved hands from slipping off and feel strong and durable. They closely resemble the exterior of the vehicle in both appearance and use. The bottom row of switches controls auxiliary systems, while the top row controls the air conditioning.

The Hummer has a spacious interior thanks to the wide central console, translucent roof panels, and big windows. The lightweight panels can be taken off and stored in the front trunk if you want to enjoy the outdoors fully.

Hummer Ev’s Tech

A technological powerhouse with plenty of new and improved features is the Hummer EV. The most recent iteration of General Motors’ Super Cruise self-driving system is one of the most sophisticated. Under some circumstances, it is capable of driving the car hands-free on more than 200,000 miles of enabled roads. An automatic lane-change feature is part of the most recent Super Cruise.

There are a tonne of EV-specific features as well. One-pedal driving is possible with the Regen on Demand feature, which is operated by a paddle on the steering wheel. Lifting your foot off the accelerator will cause the car to decelerate more quickly in this mode, and the momentum will be used to recharge the batteries. According to GMC, the modular batteries are made to maximise performance and temperature control. Additionally, the smartphone app’s Energy Assist feature allows for preheating of the battery to improve charging effectiveness.

The screens and controls for the infotainment system are great. The Hummer EV has a very premium feel thanks to its sharp visuals, high-resolution cameras, and various on-screen animations for drive modes. It will be difficult for even the most devoted GMC owners to locate recycled surfaces or controls from other GMC vehicles.

Hummer : Comfort and Cargo

The Hummer EV is a crew cab pickup truck with a five-foot-long bed, whereas older Hummers were primarily SUVs. Given the expense of the Hummer and the fact that its cabin isn’t as roomy as GMC’s Sierra crew cab pickup truck, inside materials might be of higher quality. However, a revolutionary removable roof that revives a T-top-like form common in GM sports and muscle vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s allows the interior to be opened to the elements.

The clear panels resemble a typical panoramic glass sunroof while they are in place, but when they are raised and stowed in the front trunk of the Hummer EV, the vehicle takes on a convertible appearance reminiscent to the Jeep Gladiator. There are several moon-inspired details inside that serve as not-so-subtle reminders of GM’s connection to NASA astronauts and the electrically powered Apollo 15 lunar rover that the company helped engineer, such as a moon-boot footprint on the dead pedal and speaker grilles that depict the Sea of Tranquility.

Hummer : Towing and Payload Capacity

GMC claims that the Hummer EV can tow up to 7500 pounds, speaking of payload. That is less than the 11,000-pound and 10,000-pound towing capacities of rival EV pickups like the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, respectively. The range of our Hummer EV decreased to barely 140 miles at 70 mph when towing a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer during our towing test.

Hummer : Value and Verdict

A truck like the GMC Hummer EV has never existed before. Its pros and flaws contrast is practically impossible to fathom, let alone evaluate. Its suspension, ground clearance, T-tops, great radio, and ADAS make it as appropriate for lengthy highway drives as its suspension, traction, and ground clearance make it for some of the hardest trails out there. At the same time, it isn’t quite as opulent as anything else comparable in price. Having the largest battery of any contemporary passenger EV, which leaves it with a CO2 debt to pay off, as well as falling short of many hybrids’ energy efficiency, makes it the most severe case of greenwashing the automobile industry has ever engaged in.

Even though it might sound as like I despise the Hummer EV, I don’t. A four-and-a-half-ton truck that spins all four wheels on a hard launch, doesn’t get confused by U-turns, and handles highways better than some drivers is unquestionably astounding. Its existence bothers me because I don’t believe the typical American driver is skilled enough to operate a 1,000-horsepower, 9,000-pound truck, let alone one with pathetic excuses for mirrors and a hood that is so high you could run over an adult without noticing. There are software lockouts that prohibit WTF Mode from triggering when there are obstructions in the road, so at least GM tried to make that difficult to execute on purpose.

However, there is nothing stopping you from going out and spending two or three hundred dollars on one of the most extravagant displays of affluence ever permitted a licence plate, just like the old Hummer. And even while I might roll my eyes at Hummer EV drivers, I can at least appreciate their motivations for purchasing such vehicles and the benefits they derive from them. Only the desire to own the largest toy truck on the playground may justify the purchase, not objective evaluations of performance. In that regard, Hummer remains unchanged from the beginning. Whether for better or worse.
