Election 2022 latest news: Biden says U.S. ‘can’t take democracy for granted’

President Biden, delivering remarks on democracy on Wednesday night, tied the attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Paul Pelosi, to the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and warned of rising extremism in America.

“The assailant tried to take Paul hostage,” Biden said. “The assailant ended up using a hammer to smash Paul’s skull. Thankfully, by the grace of God, Paul survived.”

The assailant, Biden said, broke into the home asking: “Where’s Nancy?”

“Those are the very same words used by the mob when they stormed the United States Capitol on January the 6th, when they broke windows, kicked in the doors, brutally attacked law enforcement … hunting for officials and erecting gallows to hang the former vice president Mike Pence,” Biden said, speaking at Union Station in Washington.
