Unusual Space Force Plane: Two Years Without Landing

The U.S. Space Force had a challenging beginning. Donald Trump promised to create the Space Force as part of his campaign,

but its purpose inside the American armed forces wasn't immediately evident. It was met with strong political opposition

(and not a little mockery) for reviving 1980s SDI thinking through Arms Control and for unwelcomely bringing the military into America's space strategy.

Before Trump's proposal, NASA, a civilian government organization, has been in charge of overseeing American space travel.

No one seemed to be entirely sure what to do with the new Space Force while NASA itself was facing complicated pressures in the middle of the growth of private spaceflight.

Less than a year before Trump, its most vocal supporter, lost the Presidency, it received financing (via Space Force) for the first time in 2019.
